Deep in the jungle of Udon Thani, North Eastern Thailand is a mysterious and mythical temple named Wat Kham Chanot. Revered by the Thais, it is believed to be the gateway to the underwater realm, and resided over by the great Naga, a divine half-human, half-serpent being that can take on human form and the being that gave shelter to the Lord Buddha during his marathon meditation session which ended in his achieving enlightenment.
Two Naga, known as Grandpa Naga Pu Si Suttho and Grandma Naga Si Pathumma are believed to emerge every night from the underworld through the lake beside the forest to roam around amongst the trees.
The Chanot trees are all sacred as are the bodhi fig trees which have an impressive root system partially exposed above ground level, and tend to be the attraction of visitors to place blessings and wish for good fortune.
