I use a Tamron 28-300mm with my Canon 7D (1.6X conversion factor) and shoot mostly from my kayak. I like the broad range from slight wide-angle to nice telephoto. My kayak often allows me to get close enough to wildlife (sometimes a matter of a few feet) that I require the shorter focal length, and I like the close-focus capability to shoot leaves and feathers that float past my boat. The lens is also quite compact (3" long when set at 28mm) and extremely cheap ($60 on ebay). What more could I ask for?

Thanks @Sthomas450. Really appreciate your reply. I have 7d M2 and considering to get 100-400 at some point. I already have 70-300 L version, but the reach is not enough.
