I have no issues with 70-200mm Jack, it is a great lens and gets the job done.. Although I sometimes use a 2x converter to provide a little more reach to 400mm.. Personally I think 400mm is enough, and if it isn't then get closer to the subject.

I use a Sigma 150-600 contemporary and a Nikon 70-300. Yes the Sigma is heavy, but I still manage to hand hold and get good images. It all depends on how close you can get to the subject.

It also depends on what you want to shoot and how close you can get. In my area the majority of birds are less than 7 inches tall. They are also very hard to get close to or you have to sit still and wait for a long time. On my Sony a7rII a 200 or 300mm lens would not be enough, even a 400mm lens would struggle to get a good shot. I would need at least a 600mm lens to get good shots of those little birds. Not much large wildlife around here.

On my Nikon d7100 i would need a 400mm lens or longer.

With converters you loosing f stops and someone said you loosing IS as well, which isn't great.

I know with my 70-300 I won't get really close to the subject. But maybe 100-400

That's what I'm thinking, it may be enough to take images of animals, but when comes to birds, that will be a mission.

Yes, but if if pushed for budget the Sigma is fine.

Thanks @matttrevillion , I would probably save more to get that best photo quality.
