Yes it is salt... A LOT :)

Uyuni is the worlds largest salt flat...look here..

Lots of tourists... not so lonely along the usual paths.

There are even a couple "islands" in the sea of salt:

That is a huge salt flat. The Netherlands are 41.543 km² so it is a quarter of the size of The Netherlands.

Yes, you could drive 100 km and still be inside it ... In the rain season it turns into a very shallow lake.
